The second and third places went to Ade van Heerden and Boipelo Mabe respectively.
Nel-Peters elevated her status by competing and winning the 2017 Miss Universe title. It was her first time visiting the United States. The 66th installment of the Miss Universe pageant took place on November 26, 2017, in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was hosted by Steve Harvey and Ashley Graham. Nel-Peters was crowned Miss Universe 2017, succeeding France’s Iris Mittenaere. Her win also marked the first title for South Africa since Margaret Gardiner back in 1978. The second place went to Laura Gonzalez of Colombia and the third to Davina Bennett of Jamaica.
During her tenure as Miss Universe, Nel-Peters visited countries like Egypt, Mexico, France, and India. She advocated for equal pay for women in the workplace. She also started a self-defense workshop for women (Unbreakable campaign) following a carjacking attempt in Hyde Park, Johannesburg. Nel-Peters was succeeded by Catriona Gray of the Philippines in December 2018.
