ORIGIN
Daryl Coley was an American gospel singer, pastor and former member of the Helen Stephens And The Voices Of Christ ensemble. He was known for popular songs like “He’s Preparing Me”, “Jesus Saves” and “Beyond the Veil”. Coley was born on October 30, 1955, in Berkeley, California. He grew up in a Christian household and began playing the clarinet and piano as a child. Coley attended Castlemont High School in Oakland, California. He became a member of the Helen Stephens And The Voices Of Christ ensemble at the age of 14.

CAREER
Coley started out in 1977 with the Edwin Hawkins Singers. There he played the keyboard for six years before starting his solo career. He performed in various jazz clubs and collaborated with artists like Nancy Wilson, Rodney Franklin and Earth, Wind & Fire. He also served as a songwriter and musical director for Tramaine Hawkins.

Coley released his debut album, Just Daryl, in 1986 which featured the song “II Chronicles”. The album was fairly successful and picked up a Grammy award nomination. His third album, He’s Right On Time: Live From Los Angeles, was released in 1990 and featured the songs “He’s Right On Time” and “I Need Your Spirit”. Coley’s 1992 live album, When the Music Stops, peaked at number one on the gospel charts.

PERSONAL
Daryl Coley was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes in 1991. After years of struggle, he spent his final days in hospice of care. He died on March 15, 2016, at the age of 60. He’s survived by wife ‘Jenelle’, and his three children including son ‘Te’ceion’.
