Darwyn Cooke was a Canadian cartoonist, comic book writer and animator. He was best known for his work on the DC superhero characters and noir crime stories. Cooke was born on November 16, 1962 in Toronto, Canada. Some of his popular works include Batman/The Spirit, DC: The New Frontier, and Richard Stark’s Parker: The Hunter. He was honored with the Joe Shuster Award in 2007 followed by the Eisner Award in 2015.

CAREER
Cooke began his career as a professional comic book artist in the 1980s. He was forced to leave the comic book industry due to financial difficulties. He survived by working as an art director, graphic and product designer. He would ultimately return to comics in the 1990s. Cooke landed a job with Warner Bros as a storyboard artist after responding to an ad posted by animator Bruce Timm. He worked on the animated series for Batman and superman. He later directed the ‘Men in Black’ series for Sony.

Cooke’s graphic novel ‘Batman: Ego’ was published by DC Comics in 2000. He worked alongside Ed Brubaker to revamp the Catwoman character the following year. Aside from DC, Cooke also contributed to several projects for Marvel, and IDW Publishing. He rose to prominence in 2004 with the introduction of his miniseries, DC: The New Frontier. The series set in the 1950s and features Golden Age characters (Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman), and Silver Age characters (the Flash, Green Lantern, and Martian Manhunter).

PERSONAL
Darwyn Cooke died on May 14, 2016 at the age of 53. His reported cause of death was lung cancer. He was receiving palliative care prior to his death. Cooke is survived by his wife, Marsha, and his brother, Dennis.
