Danelle Umstead Is Alive

ORIGIN
Danelle Umstead is an American alpine skier and member of the US Paralympics team. She competed at the 2010 Winter Paralympics in Vancouver, the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, and the 2018 Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang. Her husband Rob Umstead serves as her sighted guide. Dubbed “Team Vision4Gold”, they’ve won 3 Paralympic bronze medals and 4 World Championships among other titles. Danelle D’Aquanni was born on February 15, 1972, in Des Plaines, Illinois. She has two sisters, Michele and Nicole. Her mother died of cancer in 1999. Her father’s name is Peter. Danelle is visually impaired (retinitis pigmentosa). She attended Plano High School, graduating in 1990.

CAREER
Danelle was 29 when she was introduced to adaptive skiing by her father. He served as her first guide. Danelle met her future husband Rob Umstead in 2005 while skiing in New Mexico. Rob took on the role as her sighted guide in 2008. The two are dubbed ‘Team Vision4Gold’. Danelle and Rob made their Paralympics debut at the 2010 Winter Paralympics in Vancouver. They participated in 5 events, winning the bronze medals for ‘downhill’ and ‘super combined’. The duo competed and won bronze for the ‘super combined’ at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi. They returned for the 2018 games in Pyeongchang, placing 6th in ‘super-G’ and 8th in the ‘super combined’ and ‘giant slalom’. In addition to the Paralympics, Team Vision4Gold has won 4 World Championship medals (2 silver, 2 bronze) and 50+ Alpine Skiing World Cup medals.

Danelle was named the 2011 Adaptive Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association. Her prior accolades include the 2010 Athlete of the Year award by the National Sports Center for the Disabled. Outside of skiing, Danelle is a motivational speaker. She shares her story and serves as a mentor to junior disabled athletes. Danelle was cast as a celebrity contestant for season 27 of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. Her professional partner is Latin dancer Artem Chigvintsev.

PERSONAL
Danelle Umstead’s height is 5ft 2in. She was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa at age 13. The condition causes the retina to progressively degenerate and causes total blindness. She also suffers from multiple sclerosis. Danelle married ‘Rob Umstead’ in 2008. Rob is a former collegiate skier for the University of Massachusetts. The couple welcomed a son, Brocton, in 2008. They currently reside in Park City, Utah.
