Dale Bumpers was an American politician and member of the democratic party. He served as the 38th governor of Arkansas (1971-1975) and United States Senator (1975-1999). Bumpers was born on August 12, 1925, in Charleston, Arkansas. He completed his BA (political science) from the University of Arkansas and his JD from Northwestern University Law School. He was admitted to the Arkansas bar in 1952. He served eighteen years as a city attorney prior to being elected as a senator. The University of Arkansas in Fayetteville honored him by establishing the ‘Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences’ in 1995. He served as chairman for the ‘Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship’ from 1987 to 1995. He married Betty Bumpers in 1949 and they had three children. Dale Bumpers died on January 1, 2016, at the age of 90. He had Alzheimer’s disease and suffered a broken hip prior to his death.
