The 14th Dalai Lama is Tibet’s political leader, religious figure, and Nobel Peace Prize recipient. He was born Lhamo Dondrub in Taktser, Tibet and uses the religious name Tenzin Gyatso. He was formally recognized as the 14th Dalai Lama in 1939 and assumed political power over Tibet in 1950. Gyatso fled to India during the 1959 Tibetan uprising. While in China, he established an alternate government in hopes that the Chinese government would move towards peace with Tibet. He has since traveled the world advocating for Tibetans and teaching Buddhism. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.
