Colin Powell was an American politician and member of the Republican party. He was the first African American to serve as U.S. Secretary of State and the first to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was also a retired four-star US Army general. Powell was born to parents Maud and Luther on April 5, 1937, in Manhattan, New York. He had an older sister named Marilyn. Powell grew up in the Bronx where he attended Morris High School. He graduated from the City College of New York in 1958 with a degree in geology. He earned an MBA from George Washington University in 1971.
CAREER
Powell served 35 in the United States Army from 1958 to 1993. It all started in college with him being appointed commander of his ROTC unit. Powell made his debut in the US Army in 1958 as a commissioned second lieutenant. He served during the Vietnam War, the Invasion of Panama, and the Persian Gulf War. His military decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Purple Heart, and the Bronze Star. Powell was a two-time recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He was first awarded in 1991 by President George H. W. Bush and again in 1993 by President Bill Clinton.
Powell served as National Security Advisor (1987-89) during the Reagan administration. He was appointed chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1987, a position he held until 1989. His military approach to solving conflicts was dubbed the “Powell Doctrine”. It proposed using extreme force to reduce casualties. Powell succeeded Madeleine Albright as the 65th US Secretary of State in 2001. He served under President George W. Bush until his retirement in 2005. Powell endorsed Senator Barack Obama during his 2008 presidential race.
