Chelsea Elizabeth Manning is an American activist and former U.S. Army intelligence analyst. She leaked thousands of classified documents to WikiLeaks and as a result, was convicted for violating the Espionage Act. She was sentenced to a 35 years prison term in 2013. Her sentence was commuted by President Barack Obama and she was released in May 2017. Manning was born Bradley Edward Manning on December 17, 1987, in Crescent, Oklahoma. She announced her gender transition in 2013. Her parents are Susan Fox and Brian Manning. She has an older sister named Casey. Manning attended Crescent High School in Crescent, Oklahoma. She continued her education at Tasker Milward V.C. School after the family moved to Haverfordwest, Wales. She returned to the U.S. in 2005 at age 17.

CAREER
Manning enlisted in the United States Army in late 2007. She completed basic training in 2008. She was presented the Army Service Ribbon and the National Defense Service Medal upon completion of her MOS course. Manning was assigned to the 2nd Brigade, 10th Mountain Division in New York. She was deployed to Iraq in 2009 as an intelligence analyst. Her title gave her access to classified databases and top-secret documents.

Manning leaked classified documents with WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange in early 2010. She confided this to Adrian Lamo who quickly alerted the U.S. Army Counterintelligence. She was arrested in May 2010. WiliLeaks began posting said documents in February 2010. This included videos and Army reports (“Iraq War Logs” and “Afghan War Diary”). Manning spent close to 3 years in pretrial incarceration. She was tried and found guilty of multiple charges including espionage and theft. She was handed down a 35 years sentence for her crimes. President Barack Obama commuted Manning’s remaining sentence in January 2017. She was released from prison in May 2017.

In 2018, Manning ran against incumbent Senator Ben Cardin in an effort to secure the Democratic nomination for a Senate seat in Maryland. She finished 2nd with 5.7% of the total votes, behind Ben Cardin. Manning was subpoenaed in February 2019 to testify in the case of the US government vs. WikiLeaks and Julian Assange. She refused to testify, and in March 2019, was held in contempt and jailed.

Chelsea Manning stands 5ft 2in tall and she’s of Welsh descent. She’s a transgender woman. She was diagnosed with gender dysphoria in 2013. Manning dated musician Tyler Watkins for some time.
