Charles Oakley is a retired American basketball player from Cleveland, Ohio. He played the power forward position for 5 different NBA teams, including the Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, and Toronto Raptors. His career highlights include NBA All-Star (1994), NBA All-Defensive First Team (1994), and NBA All-Defensive Second Team (1998). He was also known for his rebounding prowess. Oakley served as an assistant coach for the Charlotte Bobcats from 2010 to 2011. He currently serves as a coach for the ‘Killer 3’ team in the BIG3 basketball league.
Oakley was born to Corine and Charles Oakley II on December 18, 1963, in Cleveland, Ohio. He has 5 siblings, Diane, Saralene, Curtis, Yvonne, and Carolyn. Oakley attended John Hay High School in Cleveland, followed by Virginia Union University (1981-85) in Richmond, Virginia.
CAREER
For the 1984-85 season, Oakley led the Virginia Union Panthers to the CIAA championship. He averaged 24 points and 17.3 rebounds per game. Oakley was named the 1985 NCAA Division II player of the year. He led the NCAA Division II in rebounds that year. Oakley played a total of 4 seasons with the Panthers. His college stats stand at 2,379 points, 1,642 rebounds, and 94 assists. He was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in 2016.
Oakley was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the 9th overall pick in the 1985 NBA draft. However, his draft rights were traded to the Chicago Bulls. Oakley played 3 seasons with Michael Jordan and the Bulls (1985-88). He was named to the 1986 NBA All-Rookie First Team. Oakley played with the New York Knicks (1988-98) followed by the Toronto Raptors (1998-2001). He was traded back to the Bulls for the 2001–2002 season. Oakley played one season with the Washington Wizards (2002–2003). In 2004, he signed a 10-day contract with the Houston Rockets. He retired at the end of the season.
