Cesare Maldini was an Italian professional soccer coach and former player. He was 6ft tall and played as a defender. Maldini was born on February 5, 1932 in Trieste, Italy. He played professionally from 1952-1967 and coached several teams from 1970-2002.
CAREER
Maldini began his career as a player with Triestina in 1952. He played two seasons and appeared in 32 games. He transferred to A.C. Milan in 1954 and won his first league title in the 1954–55 Serie A. Maldini made 347 appearances with Milan and was appointed team captain in 1961. He won a total 4 Serie A league titles and an European Cup. Maldini made his debut with the Italian national team in 1960. He played three seasons, made 14 appearances and competed in the 1962 World Cup. He retired from the field following his 1966-1967 season with Torino.
Maldini made his coaching debut with Milan in 1970. He served as an assistant manager to Nereo Rocco. He took over as head coach from 1972-1974. Maldini went on to coach the Italian Under-21 team from 1986-1996. He won three consecutive European Under-21 Football Championships from 1992-1996. He coached the Italian national team from 1996-1998 and qualified for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. The team was eliminated in the Quarter-finals by France. Maldini retired from coaching after his 2002 season with Paraguay’s national team. He worked briefly as a talent scout post retirement, and later as a sports analyst.

His children are Paolo, Valentina, Donatella, Monica, Alessandro, Pier and Cesare. Paolo is also a former footballer most notably for his time with A.C. Milan and the Italy national team.
