Bernie Sanders is an independent politician, United States Senator, and 2016 presidential candidate. He served 36 years as an independent before joining the Democratic party in 2015. He was born on September 8, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York to Eli and Dorothy Sanders. He attended James Madison High School and was captain of the track team. He enrolled at Brooklyn College but transferred to the University of Chicago after his freshman year. He completed his BA degree in political science in 1964. He was an active member of the ‘Young People’s Socialist League’ and the ‘Congress of Racial Equality’ while in college. He lived on a kibbutz in Israel for several months before moving to Vermont.

CAREER
Sanders was elected Mayor of Burlington, Vermont in 1981, a position he would hold for four consecutive terms. He often described himself as a democratic socialist. He served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1991-2007 and Chairman of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee from 2013-2015. Sanders assumed the office of US Senator on January 3, 2007. He was reelected in 2012 for a second term. His bid for the presidency was announced on April 30, 2015, as a member of the Democratic party.
