Ben Carson is an American neurosurgeon, author, philanthropist, and 2016 Republican presidential candidate. He’s best known for separating conjoined twins. Carson was born to parents Sonya and Robert Carson on September 18, 1951, in Detroit, Michigan. He has an older brother named ‘Curtis’. Carson’s parents divorced while he was still young. He was raised by his mother who juggled several jobs to make ends meet. Carson attended Southwestern High School and his academic prowess earned him a full scholarship to Yale University. He graduated in 1973 with a degree in psychology. He went on to complete his M.D. from the University of Michigan in 1977.

CAREER
Carson became an intern at Johns Hopkins University in 1977. He became chief resident in neurosurgery in 1982. In 1983, Carson accepted a position at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth, Australia. He returned to John Hopkins a year later and became director of pediatric neurosurgery in 1985. In 1987, Carson and his team successfully separated a 7-month-old occipital craniopagus twins in Germany. He has since performed several such operations over the life of his career. Carson was honored with the Spingarn Medal by the NAACP in 2006. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush in 2008.

Carson made his debut as an author with the 1990 release of his autobiography, Gifted Hands. He was portrayed by actor ‘Cuba Gooding, Jr’ in the 2009 television adaptation, Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story. Other notable books include Think Big, The Big Picture, Take the Risk, and One Nation. Carson announced on May 4, 2015, that he was running for the Republican presidential nomination. He dropped out of the race in March 2016 after the Super Tuesday primaries. He later endorsed the candidacy of Donald Trump. He was nominated as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under the Trump administration.

PERSONAL
Ben Carson is 5ft 11in tall and has a net worth of $30 million. He married ‘Lacena Rustin’ in 1975 and they have three children, Murray, Benjamin Jr., and Rhoeyce. Carson was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2002. He made a full recovery and is now cancer-free.
