Barack Obama is an American lawyer, democrat, and the 44th president of the United States. He was elected to the U.S. presidency in 2008 and became the first African American to hold office. Barack Hussein Obama II was born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii. His parents were Barack Sr. and Ann Dunham. His parents separated in 1964 and his mother married Lolo Soetoro in 1965. Obama was raised by his maternal grandparents in Hawaii. He has multiple half-siblings including Malik and Auma.

Obama attended Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii. He graduated in 1979 with academic honors. He was also a competitive basketball player in high school. Obama defeated Republican nominee, John McCain, in the 2008 presidential election. He assumed office as the 44th president of the United States on January 20, 2009. Delaware senator, Joe Biden, was chosen as his vice president. Obama was re-elected for a second presidential term in 2012 after defeating Republican nominee Mitt Romney.
