Auston Matthews is an American professional ice hockey player currently signed to the Toronto Maple Leafs. He stands 6ft 2in tall and plays the center field position. Matthews was born to parents Ema and Brian on September 17, 1997, in San Ramon, California. He has two younger sisters, Breyana and Alexandria. Matthews is fluent in English and he speaks some Spanish. He grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona, and spent a year in Zurich, Switzerland. Matthews was homeschooled. He’s currently taking online classes with the University of Nebraska.

CAREER
Matthews was exposed to the world of sports at an early age. He played both baseball and hockey as a child. He’s also a big basketball fan with Kobe Bryant as his favorite player. Matthews began his hockey career with the Arizona Bobcats minor program. He was drafted by the Everett Silvertips with the 57th overall pick in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft. Matthews declined the offer and chose to join the U.S. National Team Development Program instead. He played for the U17 and U18 teams from 2013 to 2015. Matthews was named 2015 MVP at the IIHF World U18 Championship. He also won the USA Hockey Bob Johnson Award that same year.

Matthews moved to Switzerland in 2015 to compete in the National League A. He signed a 1-year contract to represent the ZSC Lions (Zurich). He played in 36 games, scored 24 goals, and completed 22 assists. The team was knocked out 4 games into the playoffs.
