ORIGIN
Andrew Yang is an American entrepreneur and philanthropist from Schenectady, New York. He’s the founder and former CEO of Venture for America (VFA). Prior to VFA, he worked with startup companies like Manhattan Prep and MMF Systems. Yang is a member of the Democratic Party. He was dubbed “Champion of Change” in 2012, and “Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship” in 2015. He’s sought the 2020 Democratic bid for president of the United States.
Yang was born to Taiwanese immigrants on January 13, 1975, in Schenectady, New York. His mom holds a master’s degree in statistics, and his dad holds a Ph.D. in physics. The couple met while pursuing their graduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley. Yang attended Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. He completed his BA degree in economics from Brown University (1992), and his Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School.
CAREER
Post-college, Yang accepted a job as a corporate attorney for the ‘Davis Polk’ law firm in New York City (1999). He quit the firm the following year to focus on a celebrity-based fundraising website. His next job was as VP for the healthcare startup MMF Systems (2001-05). Yang then joined forces with his friend Zeke Vanderhoek at the test prep company ‘Manhattan Prep.’ He was named CEO of the company in 2006. MMF Systems was acquired by Kaplan, Inc, in 2009.
Yang left MMF in 2012 to focus on his own company ‘Venture For America, Inc.’ Headquartered in New York City, VFA was founded in July 2011. It is best described as a nonprofit organization and fellowship program. VFA hires more than 30 employees and boasts more than 700 members. The company offers training to recent college graduates and young professionals. Their documentary film, Generation Startup, was released in September 2016. In addition to his entrepreneurial work, Yang is an author. His publications include Smart People Should Build Things (2014), and The War on Normal People (2018).
In November 2017, Yang made it official that he would be running for president of the United States in the 2020 presidential election. His campaign slogan was “Humanity First.” He promised $1,000 a month to all U.S. citizens (18+) as part of his “Freedom Dividend” initiative (Universal Basic Income). Supporters of Yang’s presidential campaign were referred to as the “Yang Gang.” Yang tackled issues such as the threat of new technologies (robots, artificial intelligence, etc) on American jobs. He was featured in the documentary film, Inherent Good, with Trae Crowder.
