Alexander Acosta is an American attorney and Law School Dean at Florida International University. He’s a member of the Republican Party. He was nominated as U.S. Secretary of Labor by President Donald Trump. Acosta was born Rene Alexander Acosta on January 16, 1969 in Miami, Florida. He’s of Cuban ancestry. Acosta attended the Gulliver Schools in Miami-Dade County, Florida. He completed his BA degree in economics from Harvard College followed by his J.D. degree from Harvard Law School.

CAREER
Acosta began his career as a law clerk to Samuel Alito on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He then worked at the law firm ‘Kirkland & Ellis’ in Washington, D.C. There he specialized in employment and labor issues. Acosta taught various classes at the George Mason University School of Law. He served as a senior fellow at Ethics and Public Policy Center from 1998 through 2000.

Acosta served on the National Labor Relations Board (2002-03) under President George W. Bush. He later served as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights (2003-05) and U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida (2005-09). Acosta was appointed as Dean of Florida International University College of Law on July 1, 2009. He was nominated by President Donald Trump in February 2017 to be the next United States Secretary of Labor. His nomination came one day after Trump’s original pick, Andrew Puzder, withdrew his name from consideration.

Acosta has served on a handful of boards including the Florida Innocence Commission and the Commission for Hispanic Rights and Responsibilities. He was honored with the Chairman’s Higher Education Award in 2013 by the South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
