AJ McLean is an American recording artist, dancer, and actor from West Palm Beach, Florida. He’s a founding member of the vocal boy band ‘Backstreet Boys.’ The Backstreet Boys have released 9 studio albums, including Millennium (1999), and Black & Blue (2000). They’ve been nominated for a total of 8 Grammy Awards. McLean’s solo album, Have It All, was released in 2010. His filmography includes Dead 7 (2016), and Disney’s The Lion Guard. In 2020, He was cast as a celebrity contestant on season 29 of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars.
McLean was born Alexander James McLean on January 9, 1978, in West Palm Beach, Florida. His parents Denise and Robert divorced when he was still a toddler. He has no siblings. McLean was raised by his mom as well as his grandparents Adolph and Ursula. As a child, he took a wide variety of dance lessons. He also showed a keen interest in acting and singing. McLean attended Osceola High School Kissimmee, Florida. For his senior year, he completed his required courses with a tutor while on the road with the Backstreet Boys.

McLean began modeling at age 5 under the guidance of his mom. At age 6, he played the role of “Dopey” in a school production of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.’ He followed up with roles in the musicals ‘The Nutcracker’ and ‘Fiddler on the Roof.’ At age 8, McLean made his film debut in the slasher film Truth or Dare? (1986) directed by Tim Ritter. He played a younger version of the lead character. McLean’s next role was that of “Skunk” in the television sitcom Hi Honey, I’m Home! (1991). Other early TV appearances followed in Welcome Freshmen, Nickelodeon Guts, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch,
The Backstreet Boys was formed in Orlando, Florida, in 1993. In addition to McLean, it consists of members Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, and Kevin Richardson. The group’s self-titled debut album was released in 1996 by Jive Records. Their second album, Backstreet’s Back, arrived in 1997. The Backstreet Boys’ third album, Millennium (1999), sold more than 24 million copies worldwide. It was certified 13x Platinum by the RIAA. Their 4th album, Black & Blue (2000), peaked at #1 on the US Billboard 200. Their 9th album, DNA, was released in January 2019.
Outside of the Backstreet Boys, McLean has released several solo projects. He sometimes uses the moniker “Johnny No Name.” McLean’s debut solo album, Have It All, was released in January 2010. It was supported by the single “Teenage Wildlife.” The album peaked at #31 on the Japanese Album chart, and at #16 in Taiwan. In 2015, McLean released the non-album singles “Live Together” and “You.” His more recent singles include “Back Porch Bottle Service”, “Boy and a Man”, “Give You Away” and “Love on the Brain.” McLean is currently working on his sophomore album titled ‘Long Road.’
In 2016, McLean was cast as “Johnny Vermillion” in the post-apocalyptic zombie horror flick ‘Dead 7.’ The film was directed by Danny Roew and produced by The Asylum. It stars fellow Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter. McLean voiced the character “Kuchimba” in a 2018 episode of The Lion Guard. He’s slated to return to television in Fall 2020 as a contestant on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars.
