Agnes Nixon was an American television writer, producer and actress. She created the popular soap operas One Life to Live, and All My Children. Nixon was born Agnes Eckhardt on December 10, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois. Her parents were Agnes Patricia and Harry Joseph Eckhardt. Nixon attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in the late 1940s.

CAREER
Nixon started her writing career under the guidance of Irna Phillips. She contributed to a number of soap operas during the 1950s and 1960s. Her early works included, Search for Tomorrow, Guiding Light, and As the World Turns. She was honored with a special Sentinel for Health award in 2002 for her contribution to Guiding Light. Nixon created the character “Rachel Cory Hutchins” for the NBC series, Another World. The show ran from 1964 to 1999 for a total of 35 seasons.

Nixon created the soap, One Life to Live, in the mid 1960s. It ran on ABC from July 1968 to January 2012 for 45 seasons. The show centers around a rich and a poor family living in the fictional town of Llanview, Pennsylvania. It won a GLAAD Media Award in 1994 for a storyline on homosexuality and intolerance. Nixon premiered her second soap, All My Children, in 1970. The first incarnation aired on ABC for 41 years from 1970 to 2011. It featured actress Susan Lucci as “Erica Kane”. Nixon won 5 Daytime Emmy Awards for Best Writing for All My Children. She was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1992, and into the Soap Opera Hall of Fame in 1994. Nixon co-created the series Loving (1983-95) with Douglas Marland. It was renamed ‘The City (1995-97)’ for two more seasons.

Agnes Nixon died on September 28, 2016 at the age of 93. Her reported cause of death was pneumonia stemming from Parkinson’s disease. She was married to auto dealer ‘Robert Henry Nixon’ from 1951 until his death in 1996. They had four children, Cathy, Emily, Mary and Robert. She’s also survived by 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
