Adam Rippon is an American figure skater and Olympic bronze medalist. He made history as the first openly gay American man to qualify for the Winter Olympics. His accomplishments include the 2010 Four Continents championship and the 2016 US national championship. Rippon was born on November 11, 1989, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He has 5 younger siblings. His mother, Kelly, is a former dancer/skater. Rippon was born with a severe hearing condition. He underwent corrective ear surgery at Yale University prior to his first birthday.

CAREER
Rippon began skating at the age of 10. He was first inspired to skate by his mother. His favorite skater growing up was Michelle Kwan. Rippon is a member of the Skating Club of New York. He trained for 7 years under coach Yelena Sergeeva starting in 2000. His first notable competition was the 2005 U.S. Championships where he won silver. Next, he competed and placed 6th at the 2005-06 ISU Junior Grand Prix. Rippon trained with the Russian figure skating coach Nikolai Morozov from 2007 to 2008. He competed and won gold at the 2007 Junior Grand Prix. He followed up with back-to-back gold medals at the 2008 and 2009 World Junior Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. He also placed 3rd at the 2008 Cup of Russia. Rippon began working with Canadian coach Brian Orser in December 2008. His senior-level national debut came at the 2009 U.S. Championships. He defeated Tatsuki Machida (Japan) and Kevin Reynolds (Canada) for the gold medal at the 2010 Four Continents Championships.

Rippon moved to California in 2012 to train under Rafael Arutyunyan. He won silver medals at the 2012 and 2015 nationals. His next big victory came at the 2016 U.S. national championship. He had to withdraw from the 2017 U.S. Championships due to a fractured left ankle. Rippon made his Winter Olympic debut at the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. He’s the oldest first-time Olympian figure skater to represent the U.S. since George Hill (1936). He’s also the first openly gay American skater to qualify for the Winter Olympics. Rippon won an Olympic bronze medal as a member of Team USA in the figure skating team event. He finished 10th overall in the men’s singles.
